Winter Wear And Tear

Though our cyber conversation had ended on a favorable note, after I signed off from G-chat I also set my phone on “silent”; I can’t explain why but at that moment I just wasn’t in the mood to hear from Tony anytime soon. On Saturday, September 4, 2010, when I set my mobile’s sound back on, I read the string of text messages that the Virginia policeman had composed to me that morning. Rather than respond directly to any of the many things he’d written, I sent an email with a couple of pictures embedded then let him know via text I’d done so. He must’ve been waiting to hear from me because he answered with a missive to my number instantaneously. I ignored it along with numerous others that followed from him persistently throughout the afternoon, until…

That evening, by way of text, Tony proposed we get together the next day.

If I continued to snub him, I would miss out on an opportunity to admire his beautiful soulful eyes and sexy smile; I texted him back immediately -- just as he knew I would.

Sunday, September 5, 2010, we met in a larger-than-Crewe city almost equidistant in travel for us. Despite the chill in the air, he’d made the journey on one of his motorcycles. I couldn’t imagine the wind at these temperatures would feel anything but bitter awful to a rider and conveyed my shock to Tony that he would brave it. He removed his gloves and said the only part of him that was suffering was his hands. I rubbed them and his arctic fingers while I listened to him talk of something called “heated gear” and his possibly investing in it so he could continue to have frequent in-person contact with me. Yes, it was a pricey purchase, but, without making it, he admitted persuading pseudo-wife he wanted to be on two wheels in winter would pose a problem for him. I refrained from asking him how a guy who repeatedly stated he had no money for nothin’ could afford to drop hundreds of dollars on fancy riding equipment.

Over the several ensuing hours we explored the area, had breakfast at a local dive -- I coffee, and he pancakes I believe -- went for a walk, fooled around like convicts fresh out of prison, and had a spectacular ol’ time. It was going so perfectly, until…

He started bitching about pseudo-wife. He filled the interior with his usual complaints, only, on this occasion, he threw in a few new, too. My initial reaction to the declamations was to offer a multitude of potential solutions. True to form, the Special Agent shot every one of them down with an excuse. I did something I’d never done while in his company: turned on the radio. It made him pause. When I remained silent as well, he resorted to what had worked for him with me in the past; he tried to give me a guilt trip. It had gotten beyond old. I gave him an earful about his girlfriend and what I thought of him regarding their relationship. In riposte, he merely resumed his anti-Priebe diatribe -- right down to his customary snide accusation that I “can’t understand the situation.” I spun the knob on the stereo up to a volume slightly lower than his voice. I guess realizing this date ‘round I wasn’t falling for his poor-abused-me you’re-rotten-for-not-trusting-me lines, Tony attempted to placate me. I replied tersely to his sweet talking, if at all. He finally shut up.

We didn’t speak a single word to one another for a good fifteen minutes. When I dropped him off at his transportation, suffice it to say our parting was nothing short of laconic. My emotions were bouncing like the silver orb in a pinball machine, however my mind kept echoing “I don’t want to lose him.”

A block away from where we’d separated, I pulled a recording devise from my vehicle console, hit stop, then played the conversation we’d had. I recited it sentence-by-sentence in my head across miles. Long before I got home, I was six thousand per cent. convinced Tony was correct: I really was a lousy person who ought be more compassionate.

I don't want you to think about that. I regret having opened my mouth about your relationship with Mizz Priebe. I most certainly will [try] not do it again.

I inferred that you've sometimes considered telling me you can't see me when I've requested because of the potential sadness on my part. I fear the more you think about it in that way, the likely you are to stop seeing me all-together -- and that I could not bear. Besides, I want to be the person who always and only makes you happy; that won't be the case if you're dwelling on the downsides.

10:16 PM DJ: Hola

10:17 PM DJ: because "this" is taking a toll on me so it must be on you also.
I don't like not being able to give you what you want when you want it.... no matter what it is... even if ti's a few moments of chat.
It's unfair and makes me sad.
10:19 PM me: See? That is what I don't want
DJ: Can't help it.
10:20 PM me: but if it's "taking a toll" on you, you will drop me
:(
10:21 PM DJ: I thought you'd turfed me yesterday. Heck I think even YOU thought you did.

me: that makes me feel you don't want me
DJ: That's not true.
10:33 PM me: it's still how it makes me feel
DJ: But it's tough to say "yes" when I can't make it happen.
me: you make it happen when you email me and text me and see me
don't you get that?
10:34 PM DJ: But then you get sad... and think you are being used. :(
10:35 PM me: so? fine, use me. I don't care. it's better than not having you at all.

Miranda Lambert Wrote That Song For Me

Tuesday morning, September 7, 2010, my State Policeman and I had a long talk over the telephone. A lot of it was a rehash of what we’d recently been emailing, texting, and chatting about via Google -- his plethora of problems with his girlfriend and his “messy” life -- but some of our verbal exchange had to do with my required appearance in Greene County Court the following day. Suffice it to say, both of us were strained; despite that, we seemed to have favorable discourse which ended on a good note.

I posted a narrative on I HeArTE JADE regarding my arraignment, mentioning in it -- without going into detail -- a falling out of sorts I had with Tony. In the original entry, I had linked to pseudo-wife’s Facebook, then, with no desire to out-and-out burn bridges with my sweetheart, or especially reveal him as one of my sources, I went back and removed the link. Once his agency publicly identified him as being the one involved with me and I began this blog, I had no qualms re-linking her page and did just that.

So. Here is the rest of the story, which I would’ve composed at the time had I not been wickedly constrained by my conscience and an emotional attachment to Special Agent Gattuso:

In Richmond, I pulled into the area where Tony had suggested we connect. It was a huge plaza with multiple choices of where to go. After a couple of unsuccessful, highly irritating, efforts to locate the exact store he told me he’d be in front of, I sent him a message informing him, essentially, that I was lost. I obeyed the directions in his reply and soon spotted his SUV.

By the time I exited my car, Tony was standing at my driver’s door with his sturdy arms reaching to sheathe me. Like always, we held each other for a few minutes before we unclasped. With the smidgen of space between us, I gave him a once-over. He looked gorgeous in his navy-blue polo shirt, Levis, and cowboy boots. Although I’d had a less-than-perfect day, and traveled all the way there in a foul mood, my eyes drinking in the man who was gazing at me lifted my spirits instantly.

Since he expressed an interest in it I shared with him how the proceedings in Greene had gone for me, plus how disturbed I’d gotten merely by being in the county that had brought me so much grief due to my husband’s disgusting activities there. Tony listened, occasionally offering words of comfort or annoyance at what I’d endured.

Out of nowhere Tony declared that his inability to give me what I wanted put him in a state of constant worry. I tried to wrap my brain around his announcement and its relevance, but the abrupt disjointedness to our conversation confused me. He does give me what I want. What is he talking about?

I told him not to sweat it, that I was fine with our relationship, that he more than satisfied me. I added I was sorry he was unhappy with the rest of his life and implored him not to let what he erroneously believed I wanted affect us. I assured him, as I’d done so many times in the past, that I wasn’t pushing for anything beyond what we had.

Tony reacted by shouting at me -- a disjointed onslaught about it being tough enough for him trying to meet the demands of pseudo-wife... his family... his co-workers; the idea that he couldn’t also please me had gotten to be too much for him to handle. Is he breaking up with me? Over something I don’t even feel?

I was already far out of sorts from the earlier events of the day and I started to tear up. “See? See? This is why I can’t keep doing this! I make you sad!” he hollered. I noticed his own beautiful brown orbs were pooling.

“You... you... don’t want to see me anymore?” I inquired cautiously, unsure if I could bear an affirmative. I didn’t really get an answer from him. Instead, with his voice raised even louder, he only reiterated how very much he liked me.

I desperately needed him to be straightforward. “So... you do want to keep seeing me?”

He bellowed “Yes, I want to; I’m not sure how to though.”

By then we’d garnered the attention of multiple people randomly spread throughout the populated square. Now? He’s doing this to me now, of all days?! The cerebrations catapulted out of my mind and fell off my tongue in front of him. In a flash, on top of being perplexed, I was ticked. I wasn’t the one who’d sought him out; he was the one who’d contacted me in the first place. I wasn’t the one cheating on anybody. I wasn’t the one who was hiding my true self from my family. “Why are you yelling at me?!” I asked in bewilderment. “I didn’t do anything! I’ve. Done. Nothing. Wrong.”

Tony paced the concrete, running his hands through his dark hair. He repeatedly apologized for sucking me into his nightmare, insisting I “deserved better” than him.

I flung open the back of my car and retrieved a change of clothes. While he tried to figure out what else to roar at me, I stood there in the open, removed my shoes and shirt, slipped into jeans, wiggled out of my skirt, put another top over my bra, and laced up my Converse. About twelve feet away Tony had stopped moving to watch me. “What are you doing?” he wanted to know. I glared at him and remarked “I’m leaving.” I’d placed my discarded garments in my Camry, and I shifted them aside as I got in. Tony swiftly grabbed and clung to the door to stop me from shutting it. At that point, I didn’t care what was crawling out of his mouth or at what decibel; all I craved was to get away from him.

I fought with the VSP Officer to close the piece of metal between us. He was plainly stronger but eventually he let me win. The last thing I heard him utter was “Do you need me to tell you how to get back from here?” I managed to furnish a refusal and took off.

I, of course, went the wrong way when I left. Many blocks down an unfamiliar street, I retreated to a place to attempt regaining my composure. There I set my head to rest on my arms on the steering wheel and just sobbed. Ultimately -- and I’ve no clue how -- I made it back to my stomping grounds.

I cried nonstop for four days. My boss sent me home from work during that period because I was leaving lakes of tears everywhere. Seriously. Completely inconsolable is an understatement. I was positive I’d never ever hear from my State Policeman again. And then...

I have mixed feelings about this. But mostly it's the overall cleverness that strikes me.

The Madman's Marionette

All right, yeah, sure, so it wasn't much: that unexpected email from him with nothing more than a link; but 'twas enough to show me My State Policeman was still thinking about me and, more importantly, obviously wanted me to know it.

I kept my response to him brief and on-topic, although what I really felt like composing was a rambling gushy schoolgirlish reply along the lines of being thrilled by his missing me.

I'm not sure if Tony was hovering around the 'net waiting to hear from me, maybe he just happened to be accessing his Gmail at that exact time, but, within a minute of me sending my answer, my cellular buzzed. He'd texted an acknowledgement he'd received what I'd written; a moment later came a flirtatious one-liner, then another, then another, and another. He was behaving as if that horrible recent fight of ours had never even occurred.

Should I ignore him? Or go with the flow?

My heart took the reins. Damn him for being soooooo sexy! I typed back in kind to his lustful conveyances. This set off a flurry of erotic texts, carrying on long past midnight, between us. I finally fell asleep, my dreams riddled with bringing to life the fantasies we'd just communicated in words.

I was wakened the next morning by my phone's alert of incoming messages. I smiled as I perused them through bleary eyes. Apparently Mr. Gattuso had a similar slumber of vividness. We exchanged more sexually-charged comments over the next few hours before those on his end promptly ceased. I figured he'd simply gotten distracted by real-world trifles. However, the more I thought about it the more I focused on what he'd said during the public argument we'd had and the self-disparaging remarks he'd made throughout the course of our relationship.

Being a mistress is supposed to be fun. I did not sign up as a toy for the mind games of a neurotic man.
